Jonathan Core, Divisional Manager of Jean Lefebvre (UK), was one of four industry deemed professional experts who helped contribute towards the 2015 Shell Bitumen Handbook, by writing Chapter 15, Transport, Laying and Compaction of Asphalt.

Jonathan said: "Throughout my career people within the industry, both in the UK and overseas have referenced various chapters, sub-headings and paragraphs from within the relevant issue of the book. So it was a privilege to be asked to contribute to the latest edition. I hope the latest issue has the same continued success as previous editions."

The sixth edition of the Shell sponsored Bitumen Handbook was published by ICE Publishing (Institution of Civil Engineers) in January this year, replacing the current edition which has been active since late 2003.

This new edition has 24 chapters, plus eight appendices, covering a wide array of bitumen and asphalt technology based topics, including:

  • revised European harmonised specifications
  • certification schemes for bitumen and asphalt
  • testing of asphalts and surface treatments
  • polymer-modified bitumen
  • recycling guidance

Of the 24 chapters, 20 were written by staff members from Shell, whilst the remaining four on specialised topics were written by industry professional experts within their chosen fields.
